In community development, we support efforts that seek to enhance the quality of life for everyone in Indianapolis and Indiana. This support is rooted in our founders’ commitment to their hometown. “All of us Lillys put together have never done as much for Indianapolis as Indianapolis has done for us,” Eli Lilly wrote in 1974. That commitment has extended across the state through grantmaking that supports Indiana’s community foundations and United Ways. We also provide funding for compelling causes throughout the country that are consistent with the values and interests of our founders.

In June 2021, 16 Tech announced new tenants for The AMP, an artisan marketplace in the 16 Tech Innovation District. The marketplace will feature more than 20 businesses providing food, drink and entertainment, 65 percent of which will be operated by people of color and women.
In 2017 Lilly Endowment approved a $38 million grant to help support the development of 16 Tech, an urban innovation district in Indianapolis’ historic Riverside neighborhood where entrepreneurs and innovators in the fields of life sciences, technology, advanced manufacturing and engineering will come together to leverage their varied skill sets, draw inspiration from regional research universities and global corporations, and work toward Central Indiana’s future economic growth.
