Request for Information from Indiana Human Service Organizations

 

As employment and economic opportunities change and governmental priorities shift, Lilly Endowment is interested in learning more about the human service organizations that support Indiana individuals and families most affected by poverty or other societal challenges. In particular, the Endowment seeks to deepen its understanding of Indiana-based charitable organizations delivering human services to Indiana residents that: iare wellestablished in their communities, ii) effectively serve as sources of support to individuals and families and iii) are reliable, trusted partners to other organizations.

The Endowment invites Indiana-based nonprofit human service organizations to submit the information outlined below. This information will help the Endowment assess the current landscape of human services across Indiana as it considers future grantmaking endeavors.

Who we are seeking information from

Nonprofit organizations that meet the following criteria are welcome to submit information.

  1. Have a principal mission to provide direct services to people facing hardships in one or more of the areas listed below. By direct services, we mean the organization is in a direct relationship with individuals and families facing hardship(s), providing them with some type of service, support or program that helps alleviate their hardship(s). By principal mission, we mean that the organization exists primarily to provide these services, supports or programs, and that such services, supports or programs constitute the majority of the organization’s activities and expenditures. Program areas of interest include:
      • Homelessness prevention and intervention 
      • Domestic violence prevention and intervention 
      • Community violence prevention and intervention 
      • Disability services 
      • Senior services 
      • Charitable food assistance 
      • Prior justice involvement/post-incarceration support 
      • Substance use disorder treatment and/or recovery 
      • Poverty alleviation 
      • Other help with basic needs 
  2. Qualify as a public charity described in Internal Revenue Code (Code) sections 501(c)(3) and 509(a)(1), (2) or (3) (required). 
  3. Have at least one full-time staff person and a budget of $100,000 or more.
  4. Have a presence in and serve residents of Indiana.
  5. Have a minimum three-year history of engaging in direct human service work in Indiana.

Who we are not seeking information from

For purposes of this request for information, we are not seeking information from:

  • United Ways
  • Community foundations
  • Arts organizations
  • Organizations that principally provide recreational programs, social opportunities or policy advocacy
  • Animal welfare organizations
  • Community development corporations (CDCs)
  • Hospitals or medical facilities
  • Childcare providers or preschools
  • K-12 schools
  • Universities
  • Government agencies
