Lilly Endowment is deeply saddened by the tragic events of last week and the long history of profound racial inequities that has led to protests over the past few days in downtown Indianapolis and across the country.

We also are saddened that the messages these protesters sought to convey about the urgent need to address these inequities have been overshadowed by others’ violent and wanton acts.

But we are heartened by the faithful leadership of those who, having felt personally the impact of racial inequity, have urged vigorous yet peaceful protests to bring about change.

We also are heartened by the passionate commitments of the many organizations Lilly Endowment regularly supports through its grantmaking as well as the thousands of dedicated Indianapolis residents from all races and walks of life who work tirelessly to foster a new, more equitable community.

For more than 80 years, Lilly Endowment, in keeping with its founders’ wishes, has maintained a special commitment to its hometown, Indianapolis.  We intend to maintain this special commitment as we strive with our fellow residents to build a more prosperous future for all.
